Static Analysis |
Improve Eigenvalue extraction procedure |
Apparently S3 internally determine the minimum number of lumped masses required for performing a eigenvalue analysis regardless of the number of modes requested. The minimum number of lumped masses required should be function of the number of modes requested. I have one case where 1 mode was requested but somehow 4 lumped masses are not sufficient. |

Static Analysis |
Improve torsion stress calculation feature |
The torsional stress calculation feature has too many inherent limitations such as boundary condition and location of maximum stresses that is actually dangerous to use, especially that the limitations and implication of the assumptions are not mentioned in the manual. In S3 torsional stress analysis, the element discretization has profound effect on the torsional stresses since the stresses are computed based on member end torsion only. In addition, the procedure totally ignored concentrated and distributed torsional loads on the member. |

Layers for visual reference |
Incorporate layers for visual reference. Allow users to draw or import backgound objects or structures that can be used only as reference and will not be included in the design or analysis. This is similar to CAD programs with multiple layers for drawings. An example is a pipe support rack where static and dynamic analysis is performed on the rack, but the pipe routing can be seen on another layer not used in the analysis. The layer could be turned on or off. It would also be useful to be able to measure dimensions from the background elements and to snap to points of the background elements when drawing the Staad structure for analysis. |

Graphical Output |
Display of the Position of Member Numbers, Relative to Member Incidence |
As with previous versions of STAADiii, member numbers were positioned closest to the "i" joint of the member incidence. This VERY IMPORTANT graphical and design characteristic of the older STAADiii predecessors does not seem to be entrained in the later STAADPro family. At best, a large, unscalable Orientation Arrow must be activated and printed on member number plots/pictures, etc. It is very difficult to read much of a structures numerical data on screen with these Arrows activated. In addition, the ability to position the numbers left, right, up, or down is incomparable to the ability to see a simple, visual representation of the member start/end. Its suggested that the option of placing the member numbers shall be based upon a position closer to Node A(i), or some other simple form of visual representation. J.Hill |

No earth quake calcualtion as per IS 1893 |
Earth quake analysis as per IS code 1893 should be done according to the example given in SP-22 page 10. In fact inabilty to do this is major drawback of staad. This is the reason we are planning to switch ove to STRAP etc. |

Providing Camber for Deflection Calculations |
STAAD SHOULD HAVE THE ABLITY TO EASILY INPUT CAMBER AS A MEMBER SPEC. IN PRACTICE CAMBER CAN AND DOES AFFECT THE SELECTION OF BEAM SIZES BASED ON SERVICABLITY. SINCE STAAD PROVIDES CAPABLITIES TO SET DELFLECTION LIMITS AND CHANGE SUPPORT CONDTIONS DURING ANALYSIS AND DESIGN, PROVIDING FOR CAMBER WOULD ALSO BE VERY USEFUL. |

Summation of Forces for selected members meeting at Joint |
Mostly in Steel Structures, the vertical bracings are connected to Gussets in Horizontal beams and hence in practically Beam connection to Column only Transfering beam forces & bracing forces as well. Hence summation of forces for selected members (may be selection in Graphically) with Selection of Critical ones ( Max/Min - Vertical Force & Horizontal Force) are required for Beam End Connection Design.Hence Please incorporate this facility/tool for easy connection design of Structural Steel members. |

member definition |
Many times an actual member is made up of many beam elements because purlings or secondary beams are incorporated in the model. In the code checking of these members one should be able to define the actual member for proper buckling length calculations and so on in a manner analogous to that used for concrete design... |

Column design and checking of actual bar layouts |
Many times in column design one gets the message that there is tension in the column or that the axial force is too low so the column design is not appropriate. This should be changed since columns do take tension forces...
Also one should be able to specify section reinforcement layout and then have it checked. This is very important for retrofits... |

Change Local Axes Orientation |
Give the option to change the local axes orientation at any point. This will be helpful in
lining up any local axes of a structure that may have become disoriented during generation. Also if the designer wanted all the walls y axis outward, x axis horiz, y axis vertical, etc. without having to rotate and reorient the elements. |

angle members geometric axis |
There should be design parameters, K & L, for angles about their GEOMETRIC axises. This would allow STAAD to calculate the correct kl/r value for angles. As for now, STAAD has no way to correctly calculate the proper kl/r values for angle members because STAAD only considers principal axises. |

perform cable analysis & tension only members |
There should be a way for STAAD to perform an analysis of a guyed tower with tension only members in the main column. As for now, STAAD CANNOT do this. If you use the PERFORM CABLE ANALYSIS command you get a warning that tension/compression not allowed. The only members allowed as tension only are the guy cables. No members in the truss can be defined as tension only. Big problem! |

There should be some way to group supports so that you can obtain the total axial, shear and over-turning moments for the group. This would aid in getting the support reactions for a spread footing when you have a column made from a truss type structure. |
